Do you have a 2nd grader? If so, s/he will be visiting the edible garden this week (Tues or Wed) and thinking back to what they planted as 1st graders last Spring. After careful observations last Spring, 1st graders got to prepare "garden burritos" with their harvest. But some plants needed the summer to grow! Do they remember which ones? Can they identify them now? What do they look like? How do we know? And hey, what part of the plant do we eat, anyway?
These are some of the questions we will ponder as we explore the explosion of growth over the summer.
If you would like to lend a hand to one of this week's classes, please see the schedule and sign up! http://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090d4baba62aaa8-harvest5
If you cannot make it but would like to find a way to help with garden activities this year, we have a busy year planned and there are many ways to get involved. Please join the Garden Committee and we'll find you a job, even if it's just 1 hour for a particular task or event.
We are currently seeking people interested in helping with one or more of the following:
- Harvesting and/or preparing a delicious dish with RAINBOW CHARD for Tuesday evening's PTA meeting!
- Building 4 new raised beds before Thanksgiving. Details forthcoming. Please let me know if you like to transplant plants, build or haul bags of soil inputs, and we'll make sure you are in the "build-it" loop!
- Serving a tasty garden recipe to 3rd graders during their lunch period on our first "TryDay FriDay", scheduled for Friday, 10/13!
- Regular maintenance of front garden space. If you have (or know anyone who has) a landscaping business, we are seeking to hire ~4 times/year.
Wishing everyone a happy, healthy Fall!
